Court dismisses request to halt Ksh 75B Lake Turkana Wind Power project
The High Court sitting in Meru has dismissed an application by Marsabit residents that sought to stop a 75-billion shilling Lake Turkana Wind Power project.
Justice Peter Njoroge instead directed Marsabit County Assembly to form a panel to arbitrate the matter within 90 days and a report be presented to the court for further directions.
The petitioners had accused Lake Turkana Wind Power Limited of acquiring 150,000 acres of their ancestral land for the project without following due process. They further argued that the there was no public participation.
The Lake Turkana Wind Power Project (LTWP) is the single largest private investment in Kenya’s history and is located in Loiyangalani District, Marsabit County.
The said project is expected to add 310 megawatts to the national grid and reduce the cost of electricity by half.
The Attorney General, the Chief Land Registrar and the National Land Commission have been named as respondents in the suit.
