Court frees four Jamhuri students accused of assault

The High Court in Nairobi on Monday acquitted four Jamhuri High School students who were accused of assaulting and injuring their schoolmates.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi ordered the release of the four students after the complainants dropped the case against the accused.

Prosecuting counsel Solomon Naulikha said the complainants, two students from Jamhuri High School, who were present in court had forgiven the accused persons.

Magistrate Andayi ordered the release of the four students for them to seek harmony with the school administration and other students to avoid interrupting their learning.

Two students, who were the complainants in the matter, told the court that they reached the decision in order to proceed with their learning without interference.

The four were accused of assaulting their schoolmates on January 23, 2018 at the Nairobi City Water offices on Murang’a Road.

They initially denied the charges and were each released on personal bond of Sh20,000 pending the hearing of the case.

Magistrate Andayi had also directed the parents to sign a guarantee to ensure the students appear in court for trial.

Jamhuri High School had hit headlines after protests against alleged discrimination by the school administration rocked the institution. About 35 students were injured during the incident.
