Court gives police 48 hours to reveal what killed Mwiki matatu conductor
A Nairobi court has given police 48 hours to complete investigations into what caused the death of a matatu conductor who was beaten up by his colleagues for allegedly overcharging passengers in Nairobi.
The investigation will be carried out as two men linked to the murder of Julius Kamau Mburu remain in police custody.
The two, John Kibe Nyagha and Geoffrey Ngamau Wambui, matatu stage attendants with Mwiki Sacco Limited, were accused of assaulting and causing the death of Mburu before a Nairobi Court.
Mburu, a matatu conductor with the sacco, was reportedly beaten to death on April 23, 2018, for allegedly charging passengers Ksh.100 instead of the normal Ksh.80 fare.
According to an affidavit by the investigating officer, the suspects were arrested on May 7, 2018, when they presented themselves at Central Police Station after learning that they were being sought by the authorities.
They were presented before Senior Resident Magistrate Miriam Mugure under miscellaneous application as police sought orders to have them detained for 7 days awaiting an autopsy report on the body, which is still lying at Kiambu Level Four Hospital mortuary.
The magistrate, however, denied the 7-day request and instead granted two days on the basis that the autopsy report would not take long and that the respondents presented themselves to police to make dealing with them easy.
