Court locks up alleged twin-baby thief

The woman accused of stealing a two-week-old twin baby at Kenyatta National Hospital has been remanded for five days to allow the prosecution conclude investigations.

Edinnah Kemunto was arraigned before Milimani Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot under miscellaneous application seeking to hold her for five days.

Lead investigator Emanuel Kiptoo told the court that preliminary investigations had revealed that the woman is involved in baby-trading syndicate in the country.

The prosecution, therefore asked for more time to travel to travel to Kisii County and the Western region of Bungoma where Kemunto is supposedly married.

The accused was arrested in Kawangware, Nairobi after a neighbour contacted the baby’s father, Job Nyatiti Ouko, after his heart wrenching story aired on Citizen TV on Monday night.

Kemunto is said to have suffered a miscarriage recently, hence, when she returned home with a baby on Monday suspicion arose among her neighbours.

Police rescued her from a mob lynching on Tuesday, when the baby’s father and his relatives stormed her home after the tip off that she was in possession of the baby.
