Court orders arrest of UoN students who assaulted KNH doctors

A Nairobi court on Monday issued a warrant of arrest for four of the six University of Nairobi students who are accused of assaulting doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital on Saturday, July 7.

Milimani Principal Magistrate Peter Ooko ordered the arrest after the students, who are out on police bond, failed to appear before court to plead to charges facing them.

Two students, however, sent an advocate who told the court that his clients were sitting for an examination, therefore, urging the court to defer the plea taking to a later date.

The accused are William Nyongesa, George Owuor, Samwel Ogwang, Brian Otieno, Michael Otieno and Ronny Ridaya.

According to court documents, the six physically assaulted doctors Ali Mahad Mohamud, Ismail Hassan and Namisi Belinda Adda causing them actual bodily harm.

The students are further accused of maliciously damaging one of the doctor’s spectacles worth Ksh.40,000, stealing a mobile phone worth Ksh.110,000 and creating disturbance to patients and Kenyatta National Hospital staff.

It is alleged that the students were taking alcohol at a Nairobi pub when a fight broke leading to one of them being injured.

They rushed the injured comrade to KNH while they were drunk and on arrival at the casualty area, they allegedly demanded that the doctors follow their orders before turning rowdy leading to a scuffle.

The court directed that the students take plea on July 23, 2018.
