Court orders Bungoma County to reinstate six sacked officers

The Employment and Labour Relations Court in Kisumu has ordered the County Government of Bungoma to reinstate six members of the County Public Service Board it had sacked last year.

The six officers moved to Court after the Bungoma County Assembly passed a resolution to fire them after it found them culpable of flouting the Constitution.

Justice Nduma Nderi ruled that the County Government had no mandate or jurisdiction of disbanding or firing members of the Public Service Board.

Justice Nderi said the petitioners were wrongfully dismissed, thereby ordering their reinstatement and payment of their salaries.

The board members had been accused of irregularly hiring 3000 staff instead of the recommended 900 by the Bungoma Governor.

The petitioners had initially obtained orders that barred Bungoma County from constituting a fresh Public Service Board.

The six are Gideon Sirai, Janet Manyasi, Elizabeth Wanyonyi, Peter Mesengeli, Stephen Wesonga and Bonventure Wasikoyo.
