Court summons ex-MP Betty Tett, husband in adopted sons robbery case

A Nairobi court on Wednesday summoned former Nominated MP Betty Tett and her husband William Tett to appear and explain the authenticity of a letter produced by their adopted son who is serving a life sentence for robbery with violence.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, the couple’s adopted son – David Tett — claimed signatures appearing in the Victim Impact Statement dated April 8, 2019 and written on April 4, 2019 are forgeries.

“On April 8, 2019 I was served with a suspicious document and I would like to cross examine the alleged author who is William Tett and another witness concerning the documents,” said David, who was representing himself.

In a short ruling, the court summoned the two to confirm whether indeed they are the authors and whether the statements are from the victims.

David filed an application to review his sentence before Magistrate Andayi but his foster father – William — is opposing it in the disputed Victim Impact Statement.

The matter will be heard on May 22, 2019.

David is serving a life sentence after a Nairobi Court found him guilty of being part of a gang that violently robbed his foster father – William Tett — on September 6, 2011 in Karen, Nairobi.

In his defense, David said he was he was hijacked by robbers at gunpoint who then demanded for him to take them to his parents’ home.

Magistrate Kiarie Waweru, however, ruled that the evidence of the witnesses was sufficient to prove that David was with the attackers and that he actively participated in the robbery.
