Court warns dons against taking part in unprotected strike

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has temporarily stopped the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) strike set for Thursday next week.

Justice Hellen Wasilwa, warned the UASU members from participating in any unprotected strike.

This is after Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum moved to court under certificate of urgency on grounds that the planned strike by the respondents is illegal.

The University’s Academic Staff Union and the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) have been named as respondents in the case.

Justice Wasilwa directed that the petition be served upon the respondents and appear fro further direction on the 18th of this month.

“Any disobedience or non –observance of the order of the court given today will result in penal consequences to you said any other persons,” reads part of the order.

The union representatives have vowed to boycott work beginning next Thursday after the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) failed to offer a counter-proposal for their 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
