Courts to close during President Barack Obamas visit

The Milimani Law Courts will remain closed on Friday over anticipated transport lockdown in the city during U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit, this according to the Deputy Judiciary Registrar.

In a notice to court users and signed by Chief Magistrate D.O. Ogembo, the court said; “Take notice that Milimani Law Court shall remain closed on Friday 24th – 7 – 015.”

The notice added; “Duties shall, however, resume on Monday 27th – 7 – 015.”

The court further said that all the cases initially fixed for hearing on mentions on Friday will be mentioned in their respective courts on Monday.

Many Nairobians had asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare Friday a national holiday as Kenyans fear getting caught up in traffic lockdown.

However, State House – through spokesman Manoah Esipisu – dismissed the calls for a public holiday saying that the disruptions to be experienced are minimal and cannot warrant a public holiday.

Already, some schools in Nairobi have asked students not to report to school on Friday.

Five major roads will be temporarily closed between Friday and Sunday during Obama’s visit.

Mombasa Road, from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Limuru Road and the Thika Superhighway will be the major roads affected.

According to Nairobi Traffic Police Commandant Edward Mwamburi, Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Limuru Road will be closed on Friday starting 2PM to late night.

On Saturday, Limuru Road and the larger Waiyaki Way will remain closed for the better part of the day when the U.S. President will be expected at the United Nations Complex for the Sixth Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

On Sunday, Limuru Road and the Thika Superhighway will remain closed from morning hours when the U.S. President addresses the nation at the Safaricom Indoor Arena in Kasarani before visiting Kenyatta University.

Uhuru Highway and Mombasa Road will also be closed for several hours on Sunday when Obama is expected to jet out of the country for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
