Covid-19: Governor Waiguru launches food distribution for vulnerable families

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has launched the distribution of relief food to the vulnerable members of the community within the county.

The exercise kicked off on Thursday where about 500 households of the elderly and people living with disabilities from Kangai and Njukiini ward benefitted from food stuff such as maize flour, rice, and cooking oil. They were also given face masks to protect themselves against the corona virus.

The governor who was accompanied by Members of the County Assembly and other local leaders said that the vulnerable in the county are suffering from the effects of corona virus as well as the ongoing rains which are causing flooding.

“Though Kirinyaga County is a major food basket, many farmers have now lost their crop after being swept away by the ongoing heavy rains which may result to people facing starvation.” Said the governor.

She pointed out that the elderly have been hit hard by the effects of Covid-19 since many of them previously depended on their children who could have lost their incomes due to corona virus.

Governor Waiguru added that the county is forming a County Food Bank Committee that will coordinate the distribution of relief aid to the needy.

The governor said that the food bank will also enable well-wishers to donate towards the kitty thereby covering more of the county’s vulnerable population.
