COVID-19: Kenya records 1,018 new cases as 16 patients die

The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that 1,018 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 6,649 tested in the last 24 hours, this brings to 51,851 the number of confirmed infections in the country.

From the cases, 989 are Kenyans and 29 are foreigners; 657 are males and 361 females, while the youngest is a nine-month old infant and the oldest is 96 years.

The CS Mutahi Kagwe-led ministry also announced that 426 patients recovered from the disease, 312 from the Home-Based Care Program while 114 were discharged from various hospitals, taking the total recoveries to 35,258.

Sixteen patients however succumbed to the disease bringing the fatality to 950.

Distribution of the 1,018 cases by counties is as follows: Nairobi 199, Mombasa 117, Kiambu 102, Kericho 73, Nakuru 67, Bungoma 66, Uasin Gishu 55, Kisumu 50, Kilifi 40, Kisii 30, Bomet 18, Siaya 18, Nyeri 16, West Pokot 16, Meru 14, Isiolo 14, Machakos 12, Murang’a 10, Nandi 10, Laikipia 9, Kajiado 9, Garissa 9, Busia 8 Tharaka-Nithi 6, Nyamira 6, Kirinyaga 5, Vihiga 5, Samburu 5, Kakamega 4, Kwale 4,Trans Nzoia 3, Baringo 3, Wajir 3, Turkana 2, Narok 2, Nyandarua 2, Taita Taveta 2, Tana River 2, and Migori 1.

In Nairobi, the 199 cases are from Lang’ata (28), Westlands (27), Dagoretti North (20), Embakasi North (16), Dagoretti South (14), Kasarani (12), Makadara (11), Embakasi Central, Embakasi West and Mathare (10) cases each, Embakasi South (9), Ruaraka (8), Kibra and Starehe (7) cases each, Kamukunji (6), Embakasi East, and Roysambu (2) cases each.

In Mombasa, the 117 cases are from Mvita (42), Kisauni (23), Nyali (21), Jomvu (20), Likoni (7), Bamburi (3) and Changamwe (2). In Kiambu the 102 cases are from Thika Town (76), Kikuyu (6), Gatundu North and Githunguri (4) cases each, Juja and Lad (3) cases each, Kiambaa and Ruiru (2) cases each, Kiambu Town and Limuru (1) case each.

In Kericho, the 73 cases are from Ainamoi (58), Belgut (9), Bureti (4), Kipkelion East and Sigowet/Soin (1) case each. In Nakuru, the 67 cases are from Naivasha (38), Nakuru West (12), Nakuru East (11), Molo and Njoro (2) cases each, Nakuru North and Rongai (1) cases each. In Bungoma, the 66 cases are from Kanduyi (38), Kimilili (23), Webuye West (3), Mt Elgon and Webuye East (1) case each.

In Uasin Gishu, the 55 cases are from Ainabkoi (50), Moiben and Turbo (2) cases each, Soy (1). In Kisumu the 50 cases are from Kisumu Central (46), Kisumu East (2), Kisumu West and Seme (1) case each.

In Kilifi, the 40 cases are from Kilifi North (31), Kaloleni (5), Magarini (3) and Rabai (1). In Kisii, the 30 cases are from Kitutu Chache South (18), Nyaribari Chache (8), Bobasi (2), Bomachoge Chache and Bonchari (1) case each.

In Bomet, the 18 cases are from Bomet Central and Bomet East with (9) cases each. In Siaya, the 18 cases are from Alego Usonga (8), Bondo (6), Rarieda (3) and Ugenya (1). In Nyeri, the 16 cases are from Nyeri Central (12), Mathira East (3) and Kieni West (1).

In West Pokot, all the 16 cases are West Pokot. In Meru, the 14 cases are from Imenti North (12) and Imenti South (2). In Isiolo, the 14 cases are from Isiolo Town and Merti with (7) cases each. In Machakos, the 12 cases are from Athi River (8) and Machakos Town (4).

In Murang’a, the 10 cases are from Kiharu (8), Gatanga and Kandara (1) case each. In Nandi, 10 cases are from Emgwen (5), Chesumei (4) and Tinderet (1). The 9 cases in Laikipia, are all from Laikipia East while the 9 cases in Kajiado are from Kajiado North (4) Kajiado Central and Kajiado West (2) cases each and Loitokitok (1).

The 9 cases in Garissa, are from Dadaab (6), Ijara (2) and Garissa Town (1). In Busia, the 8 cases are from Matayos and Teso North with (4) cases each. In Tharaka Nithi, all the 6 cases are from Chuka, while the 6 cases in Nyamira, are from Nyamira Town (3), Masaba, Nyamira North and Nyamira South with (1) case each.

The 5 cases in Kirinyaga, are from Kirinyaga Central (2), Kirinyaga North, Kirinyaga South and Kirinyaga Central with (1) case each, the 5 cases in Vihiga, are from Mbale (3) and Luanda (2) and all the 5 cases in Samburu are from Samburu East.

In Kakamega, the 4 cases are from Mumias West (4) and Mumias East (1), while in Kwale all the 4 cases are from Msambweni. The 3 cases in Trans Nzoia, are all from Kiminini. The 3 cases in Baringo are all from Baringo Central while all the 3 cases in Wajir are from Wajir East.

In Turkana, the 2 cases are all from Turkana West, the 2 cases in Narok, are all from Trans Mara West, the 2 cases in Nyandarua, are all from Oljoroorok, the 2 cases in Taita Taveta, are all from Voi, and the 2 cases in Tana River, are all from Galole. The case in Migori is from Uriri.
