COVID-19: Kenya’s positivity rate at 12.7% as 511 people test positive, 22 dead

Kenya has recorded 511 new COVID-19 cases from 4,020 samples tested in the last 24 hours, marking a positivity rate of 12.7%.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health said the new cases include 477 Kenyans while 34 are foreigners. This now brings the country’s total cumulative cases to 157,492.

The Ministry also announced that 22 deaths had been reported in the last 24 hours with 18 having occurred on diverse dates within the last one month and 4 being late death reports from facility record audits also having occurred in the last one month. This now pushes cumulative fatalities to 2,665.

The 511 new cases are distributed across the country as follows: Nairobi 107, Mombasa 63, Kericho 36, Kisii 34, Nakuru 29, Kiambu 22, Bomet 20, Kisumu 19, Makueni 18, Nyamira and Kitui 16 cases each, Turkana 15, Siaya 13, Mandera 11, Embu 10, Kilifi 7, Uasin Gishu 7, Machakos 7, Busia, Kajiado, Garissa, Kwale and Nyandarua 6 cases each, Laikipia 5, Murang’a and Nyeri 4 cases each, Bungoma and Kakamega 3 cases each, Meru, Migori and Homa Bay 2 cases each, Nandi, Narok, Marsablt, Trans Nzola, West Pokot and Kirinyaga case each.

At the same time 467 patients are reported to have recovered from the disease, 385 from Home Based and Isolation Care, while 82 are from various health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries now stand at 107,303.

According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 1,365 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 6,926 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

Currently there are 192 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 35 of whom are on ventilatory support and 127 on supplemental oxygen. 30 patients are on observation.

“Another 184 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 169 of them in general wards and 15 in High Dependency Units (HDU),” said the Ministry.

On the ongoing vaccination exercise, a total of 840,075 persons have so far been vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease countrywide.

“Of these 486,050 are aged 58 years and above, Health Workers 154,031, Teachers 129,527, while Security Officers 70,467,” added the Ministry.

Nairobi leads in the five top counties that have the highest number of vaccinated persons at 258,930 followed by Nakuru with 55,375, Kiambu 45,345, Uasin Gishu 40,258 and Nyeri with 32,294.

Counties with lowest numbers of persons vaccinated to date include Wajir 2,016, Garissa 2,012, Isiolo 1,438, Tana River 732, Lamu 609 and Marsabit 574.
