COVID-19: Nine dead, 139 new cases recorded as total infections rise to 37,218

Kenya’s COVID-19 infections on Tuesday rose to 37,218 after 139 more cases were recorded from 1,774 samples tested within the last 24 hours.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, speaking during the daily coronavirus press addresses, said 125 of them are Kenyans while the remaining 14 are foreigners.

Dr. Mwangangi revealed that 112 out of the 139 are males while 22 are females; with the youngest being 4 years old and the oldest 82.

The cases were distributed across various counties as follows: Nairobi (46), Kisumu (44), Mombasa (9), Kajiado (9), Kericho (9), Kiambu (6), Laikipia (4), Machakos (3), Nakuru (2), Garissa (1), Kirinyaga (1), Kisii (1), Makueni (1), Meru (1), Embu (1) and Turkana (1).

In terms of sub-county distribution, the 46 cases in Nairobi are from Westlands (8), Kibra and Langata (4) cases each, Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South, Embakasi East, Embakasi South, Embakasi West, Kasarani and Makadara (3) cases each, Ruaraka and Starehe (2) cases each, Embakasi Central, Embakasi North, Kamukunji, Mathare and Roysambu (1) case each.

In Kisumu, the 44 cases are from Kisumu West (40), Kisumu Central (3) and Muhoroni (1). In Mombasa, the 9 cases are from Jomvu (4), Kisauni and Nyali (2) cases each, Mvita (1).

In Kajiado, the 9 cases are from Kajiado West (4), Kajiado East (3) and Kajiado North (2). In Kericho, the 9 cases are from Ainamoi (8) and Belgut (1).

In Kiambu, the 6 cases are from Kiambu Town (3), Kiambaa, Ruiru and Thika (1) case each. In Laikipia, the 4 cases are all from Laikipia East, and the 3 cases in Machakos are from Athi River (2) and Machakos (1), while the 2 cases in Nakuru, are all from Nakuru East.

Dr. Mwangangi revealed that 198 patients also recovered from the disease, 46 of them under the Home Based Care programme while 152 were discharged from various facilities; this takes the total number of recoveries thus far to 24,147.

Fatalities also rose to 659 after nine more people succumbed to the disease.
