Cracks in PNU as heads move to court over leadership

The row between  Party of National Unity (PNU) top leaders has deepened after party chairman, John Kamama Mbugua, and its Organizing Secretary, Alphonse Musyoki, moved to court seeking to have a delegates conference set for September 9 stopped.

The two argue that the party Secretary General John Okemwa Anunda’s notice to call for the said meeting is null and void as it intends to endorse Meru Governor Peter Munya as the party leader without following the necessary procedure as stipulated in the party constitution.

In the documents filed before the Political Party Tribunal, the two argued that Anunda has no power to call for a National Governing Council (NGC) and the National Delegates Conference (NDC).

“This tribunal has jurisdiction under section 40 (1) (a) of the Political Parties Act to hear and determine this case,” they argued.

Munya declared that he will be seeking re-election, and the presidency in 2022 through the PNU ticket.

This is not the first row the party has experienced.

In August, Meru Governor Peter Munya lashed out at Party of National Unity (PNU) Chair John Kamama for linking the party to the newly formed Jubilee Party.

In an interview with Citizen TV, Munya said that PNU was not a one-man party and whatever decision Kamama took regarding dissolution of the party was his personal stand.

He insisted that the party would not dissolve and join Jubilee, adding that a delegates meeting slated for September will mark a new era in the party.

“There is no meeting within the organs of the party that have agreed on a merger or dissolution of PNU. Kamama’s decision is only personal,” he said.

“We’ve been saying consistently that parties should be allowed to thrive and people to compete. Coalitions should be encouraged to promote democracy,” he said.
