Police officer from Karatina revealed as suspected gang member

It has now emerged that a crime police officer based at Karatina is one of the suspected gang members involved in a planned robbery.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), two of the gang members were gunned down at Njegas in Kirinyaga County on Thursday.

Intelligence-led operation by detectives from the Special Crime Unit acting on a tip-off about a planned robbery by the gang who were using a Toyota Caldina…” the DCI said on Twitter.

One other suspect was reportedly arrested and an AK47 rifle with 12 rounds of ammunition recovered during the operation.

The suspects are also reported to have had two motorcycles that they were planning to use during the robbery before the sleuths got wind of their scheme.

Detectives were trailing the gang after they reportedly stole Ksh.13,000 from a group of women.

“The suspects defied orders to surrender and instead opened fire using the AK rifle… The officers responded as such fatally injuring two of them,” said DCI.

A further search in the car they were using reportedly revealed three teargas canisters and motor vehicle registration plates.

Resident had filed complaints about the gang terrorizing them and a manhunt was launched.

The rest of the suspects are being sought by police.
