Crisis looms as varsity unions issue strike threat

University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) members now say they will down their tools on Thursday next week over the failure by the government to implement a CBA signed in 2013.

According to KUSU Secretary General Charles Mukhwaya and his UASU counterpart Opiyo Wesonga, the university staff will withdraw services in seven days saying the government has illegally failed to honor their deal.

The two university staff unions accuse the government of ignoring their grievances, including demands for better pay for lecturers and improved working conditions.

They are now appealing to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Labor CS Phyllis Kandie to act urgently on their issues or face a nationwide strike that will paralyze operations in all public universities.

Their call comes at a time when the government is dealing with a health sector crisis occasioned by a 40-day strike by doctors in all public hospitals to push for the implementation of a CBA signed in 2013.

The doctors have declined to resume duty despite a 40 per cent pay hike deal offered by the government, vowing to stay put until their CBA is implemented in full.
