Crisis looms in Tana Delta as main well dries up

Crisis looms in Tana Delta as the only shallow well relied on by more than 20,000 people has dried up.

A spot check by Citizen Digital to the area revealed that following the drying up of the well, children have started dropping out of schools because of the drought and animals have started dying of starvation.

Women are the most hit by the drought, as many are walking more than 50 kilometers in search of the precious commodity.

The Head Teacher of Assa Primary School, Athaman Dube, said that the school has had more drop puts since the drought hit, adding that 30 pupils aren’t attending school in his institution alone.

He said that the school receives water from a water boozer for use by pupils in the boarding section, but since the shallow well dried up residents have stormed the institution demanding for water – an incident that has strained the institution’s supply. Dube said that the water boozers should be increased to at least 20 from the current two.

Assa location Chief Abdulrahman Shore confirmed that all the shallow wells have dried up.

Ali Wario is requesting the government to re-introduce the destocking and restocking to save residents from further losses.

During the Narc regime the then Livestock minister Mohamed Kuti introduced the buying of livestock during drought hit and the program saved thousands of pastoralists.

Area MCA Mr. Masha Boru also requested the county government to provide enough water boozers in the area.

Assa, Odo Ganda, Iddi, Charicha, Magan, Dase, Onjila, Elralsa, Girfu and Kone villages are the worst affected.
