CS Amina launches county education quality forum

Cabinet Secretary in Charge of Education Ambassador Amina Mohammed on Thursday March 8, launched County Dialogue on Education Quality aimed at helping to improve learning outcomes for all children in the country.

According to Amb. Mohammed, the challenge in the education system has shifted from one of access to one of quality and relevant education following the low learning outcomes, which have been the focus of a wide range of studies in the recent past.

The CS who speaking at Maasai Mara University in Narok North Sub County , said the question the forums are trying to answer is how to move education to the next level to ensure Kenyan students are learning and teaching is taking place in the schools.

She said the County Education Quality Dialogues are expected to be interactive fora with education stakeholders in a bid to give feedback on national assessments results and engender discussion with a view to coming up with County specific interventions towards improved learning outcomes.

Amb. Mohamed who was leading the first Public forum since her appointment in the ministry said the government has allocated Sh. 6 Billion in the current financial year to 2,576 selected secondary schools to ensure creation of sufficient capacity in secondary schools to absorb all the 2017 KCPE candidates.

She said cumulatively, policy interventions targeting access to education have resulted in impressive gains saying early Childhood Education, for example, rose from 2.9 million in 2013 to 3.2 in 2016.

Moreover, she added that enrolment to Primary and Secondary rose from 9.9 million to 10.1 million, and 2.1 to 2.6 million respectively within the same period.

Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang challenged teachers to ensure they are giving quality education to their learners saying the quality of education is as good as the teacher.

The PS said the department is keen in improving the book ratio in all schools so as the playing ground is the same for all the learners in the country.

On his part, Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) for Education Simon Kachapin challenged parents in the county to take their children to school saying education is key in fighting poverty in the country.

He called upon the public to take advantage of the forums to give their views to improve education because the government was investing heavily on education.

Narok County Commissioner George Natembea warned parents who expose their girl child to early marriage that they risk facing stern action.

He challenged education officials to visit schools regularly so as to monitor their progress.
