CS, Former KNEC Boss Grilled For Eating Chicken

Chirchir and Wasanga are being grilled by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives over their involvement in the ‘chicken-gate’ scandal where the electoral and exam bodies have been accused of receiving bribes in order to award printing tenders to a UK firm Smith and Ouzman.

Chirchir, who was a commissioner in the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC), is alleged to playing a central role in the controversial tendering process.

On the other hand, the KNEC chief is also accused of receiving bribes from the same firm in order to award examinations printing tender.

The grilling of the two comes just a day after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair Issack Hassan appeared before the anti-graft detectives.

Hassan dismissed the allegations saying that they were malicious and being fuelled by a section of the media. He maintained his innocence and asked EACC to speed up the investigations so that all culpable persons can face the full force of law.

Smith and Ouzman Directors Jailed

The investigations were launched after the UK's Southwark Crown Court jailed 71 year old Christopher John Smith and his son 43 year old Nicholas Charles Smith, both directors of Smith and Ouzman, for making corrupt payments to officials in Kenya and Mauritania.

The two Smith and Ouzman officials were jailed in the UK after they were found guilty of bribing Kenyans officials to win printing tenders at the defunct IIEC and KNEC.

The younger Smith was imprisoned for three years and his father, the chairman of the company, was sentenced to 18 months in jail, but the punishment was suspended for two years for what the judge described as a "simple act of mercy".

According to the prosecution, Kenyan Trevy Oyombra was the broker who ensured that the printing company secured the contracts after payment of bribes to officials of IIEC and Knec.

Oyombra will be questioned next week.

Others mentioned are former IIEC commissioners Ken Nyaundi, Kenneth Karani and Hamida Ali Kibwana and KNEC officials Ephraim Wanderi, Michael Ndua and Geoffrey Gitogo.
