CS Kariuki impeachment: Jubilee to handle matter internally

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has asked Members of Parliament spearheading the proposed impeachment of Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki to let the issue be handled by the Jubilee Parliamentary Group.

Over 20 lawmakers want the Health CS who has been in office for slightly almost two months, sent home over her handling of the brain surgery mix-up incident at Kenyatta National Hospital.

In a statement to newsrooms, Duale said he had met the said MPs and assured them that Parliament’s Health Committee would look into the matter.

“We have resolved with the members that that the mater needs to be dealt with internally through the Jubilee Parliamentary Group structure. We resolved to give a chance to the departmental committee on Health chaired by Hon Sabina Chege to investigate the matter and table their report in the House for debate,” said Duale.

The House Majority leader said the Health Committee will have met CS Kariuki by Friday.

“Thereafter we will use the Jubilee structures in the House in resolving the matter arising from the recommendations of the health committee,” he added.

More than 100 MPs are reported to have signed an impeachment motion against CS Kariuki following her move to suspend Kenyatta National Hospital CEO Lily Koros over the surgery mishap.

The MPs say the CS is liable for “abuse of office and cross violation of rules and regulations”.

They argue that it was unprocedural for the Cabinet Secretary to send Koros on compulsory leave even before commissioning an inquiry into the matter.
