CS Karoney to fast-track issuance of title deeds to Coast residents

Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney has promised to fast-track the issuance of title deeds to residents of Coast region as the government moves to resolve the perennial issue of land and squatters in the area.

Addressing residents of Mikanjuni in Mtwapa over the weekend, CS Karoney said that the government will not falter in its resolve to address land issues in the Coast region to ensure that land is no longer used as a political agenda during electioneering periods.

“During the campaign, President Uhuru Kenyatta promised Coast residents that he will provide an answer to the land question that you have been grappling with for decades, by resolving past and present land issues and making sure land is not used as a campaign agenda.

“As a Ministry we have been mandated by the President to ensure land owners at the Coast region get their title deeds and squatters are resettled so that they have a place to call home,” she said.

Karoney also urged the residents to resist the urge to sell their land once they receive title deeds, adding that the development being rolled out in the region will see the value of land shoot up.

“The President is rolling out extensive development projects in this region and because of that there is a growing interest in land. Instead of selling your land after getting the title deeds, use it for self-development, even as you preserve it for your children and your children’s children,” she said.

Prior to the Mikanjuni meeting, CS Karoney, in the company of Lands Chief Administrative Secretary Gideon Mung’aro and a host of MPs and MCAs, had traversed various parts of Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi County in a two-day working tour of the region.

Among the places they visited include Baolala in Malindi, Chamari in Magarini, and Roka Uyomba in Kilifi North.

Other areas include Waa Girls Secretary School, Shimoni Port and Kaslak farm in Ukunda, Kwale International Sugar Company, Mwamdudu Scheme in Kinango, Kalumani/Mnyenzeni Adjudication Section in Kaloleni, and Mwakirunge Scheme in Kisauni.

The Cabinet Secretary promised the residents that her Ministry was working hard to ensure a fresh batch of title deeds are issued to the residents in December this year, as part of the National Titling Programme.

In his speech, Mung’aro asked the residents to rally behind the government as it seeks to achieve its agenda for Kenyans.

“For a very long time the people of the Coast region have been sidelined, but under President Uhuru Kenyatta, we have realised development and prosperity. It is under this president that decades-long land issues are being resolved,” he said.
