CS Kiunjuri set to return to elective politics

Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary, Mwangi Kiunjuri, may soon resign from the government to contest for an elective seat in Laikipia County.

Speaking in Laikipia’s Withare area on Friday, January 13 where he commissioned the Withare Water Community Borehole, the CS said he will declare his stand on whether to run for a political seat in Laikipia County in two weeks time.

Kiunjuri said that he is in consultation with President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto on whether he should seek an elective seat in Laikipia or not.

In 2013, the CS contested for the Laikipia gubernatorial seat on a Grand National Unity (GNU) party but lost to the incumbent, Joshua Irungu, who contested using The National Alliance (TNA) party.

Kiunjuri lost by over 40,000 votes to Irungu but he is optimistic that things will be different this time round should he contest for the same position.

Before the 2013 election, Kiunjuri served as the Member of Parliament for Laikipia East for over 15 years.

Civil servants who wish to vie for elective seats in the August 8 polls have until February 8 to resign from the public office.
