CS Magoha directs school heads to monitor students with pre-existing conditions

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has directed all head teachers and principals to ensure they keep records of learners with pre-existing health conditions as students return to school amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CS said all learning institutions have been linked with health institutions to enable them report cases of fever from children for swift action.

“I urge principals and teachers to compile list of learners with preexisting conditions for example children with asthma, so that the necessary attention can be given to them,” said Magoha.

The Education CS reiterated that schools must ensure mandatory use of face masks, monitoring of body temperatures, washing of hands and use of sanitizers.

He encouraged well-wishers to donate face masks  to schools to protect learners from humble backgrounds who may not afford the protective kits.

Prof. Magoha, who was speaking at Olympic Primary in Kibra while monitoring the resumption of learning for Grade 4, Class 8 and Four 4 students, said measures have been put in place for phased re-opening of schools, adding that the Ministry is closely monitoring the situation.

He admitted that social distancing is still a challenge in schools pleading with teachers not to flock learners together.

The CS, at the same time, urged school heads in both public and private schools not to send learners home due to school fees.

Learners in Grade 4, Class Eight and Form Four are expected back to school from Monday, October 12 after remaining at home for over six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The students returning to school on Monday will continue with learning until December 23, 2020, when the second term will come to an end before proceeding for a one-week Christmas break.
