CS Matiang’i, IG Mutyambai summoned to explain arrest of three Senators

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutymbai have been summoned to appear before the Senate on Wednesday to explain the arrest of three Senators.

CS Matiang’i was early Monday summoned to appear to answer questions leading to the arrests but declined saying he was unavailable due to recess granted to the Cabinet by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This came after Senators Christopher Langat (Bomet), Ltumbesi Lelegwe (Samburu) and Cleophas Malala (Kakamega) were arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The officers had camped outside the Nyayo Estate house of Senator Langat and the Kitengela home of Malala for the better part of Sunday night and Monday morning.

They eventually surrendered to the sleuths in the company of their lawyers and were transferred to the police jurisdictions in their respective counties of Bomet and Kakamega respectively.

Senator Lelegwe, on the other hand, was arrested on Monday morning on his way to the Senate and was taken back to Samburu for questioning.

Their colleagues in the Senate blamed their woes on their strong stand against the government-backed revenue formula which was set for debate for the ninth sitting on Monday.
