237 Kenyans have been killed by floods since April across the country, Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa has confirmed.

The CS noted that the fatalities had risen from 194 cases which were reported in early April when the CS gave an update on the floods in the country.

The floods occasioned by the heavy long rains are expected to pound the country through June and have affected 161,000 households so far.

In numbers, an estimated 807,000 Kenyans have been affected by the floods so far.

In Nothern Kenya, Garissa and Mandera have borne the brunt of the floods with CS Wamalwa saying the number of those affected is set to rise.

The Tana River in the Kenyan coast and the Lake Victoria regions have also been affected with the floods rendering at least 60,000 people in Nyando homeless.

In Budalangi, 40,000 have been left homeless.

CS Wamalwa while asking Kenyans to heed to the routine warnings from the Kenyan MET said those affected will receive assistance from the national government.

“All families affected will receive support from the national government. In terms of relief food, we continue supplying to all the regions that have been affected,” he said.

At the same time, CS Wamalwa noted that some Kenyans were taking advantage and diverting the relief food meant for the needy for their own gain.

He warned that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted.
