CS Wamalwa: Four million bags of maize enough to fight hunger in 12 counties

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has alleviated fears of starvation in the country saying there is enough food in the National Strategic Grain Reserves.

Speaking at Nginyang’ in Baringo County during a food distribution exercise the CS said there are four million bags of maize to distribute to the 12 counties affected with hunger.

“The food in our national grain reserves will assist us until we are out of this drought situation,” said the CS.

He further added that the government has set aside Ksh.2billion to ensure Kenyans do not suffer from drought scourge.

“In future we are not going to be distributing relief food in this area because Baringo has the capacity to produce enough food, we are going to do mega dams that will support irrigation farming in this county,” said Wamalwa.

Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri has since said that 31 dams will be built in the next one month, a statement that has elicited mixed reactions after it was revealed that Ksh.21billion meant for the Arror and Kimwarer projects is unaccounted for.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is currently probing the scam that has seen four CSs grilled and put an Italian firm on the spot.

On his part, Baringo Deputy Governor Jacob Chepkwony said the hunger situation is alarming because the county has overstretched its reserves after distributing over 1000 bags of grains in the last four months.

“It’s not all areas of Baringo but some specific parts which are affected by the current drought situation, we are calling on the national government to assist in combating the situation,” said Mr. Chepkwony.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi added that the drought was a result of delayed rains but the national government is laying strategies with the county officers to fight it.
