Cuban doctor posted in Siaya County learning Luo language

The Cuban doctor deployed to Siaya County has been assigned an interpreter whose job is also to teach her the native ‘Luo’ dialect.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Siaya County Executive for Health Mary Omondi said the Cuban family physician — Dr. Jacqueline Castillo Matamoros — had already settled in and begun her work but was plagued with an obvious communication challenge.

She also revealed that the county government has provided for her accommodation, security and transport to ensure she gets a conducive working environment.

The county government’s department of health added that it was yet to get its second Cuban doctor more than one month after the foreign doctors were deployed countrywide.

The county had been allocated two Cuban doctors; a family physician and a radiologist. Ms. Omondi, revealed that the radiologist, who had been allocated to Siaya County, returned to Nairobi due to unknown reasons.

The Health CEC, however, said the county government had requested for another doctor who is supposed to be picked up from Nairobi this week.
