Daima factory shut down over untreated waste dumped into Nairobi River

Sameer’s Daima factory located in Industrial Area in Nairobi County was on Tuesday shut down indefinitely.

This follows an early morning raid by inspectors from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

The officers discovered that untreated waste from the dairy factory was being discharge into Nairobi River.

“Nema has identified 102 discharge points along Nairobi River. Out of inspections conducted, 50% of firms have complied. Ongoing inspections is to ensure remaining have complied as per Water Quality Regulation 2006 or be shut and prosecuted,” NEMA acting Director General Mamo B. Mamo said.

He was speaking to journalists after the closure of Sameer Agriculture and Livestock Limited company.

The Operation Manager was also arrested during the raid.
