Dandora family demands justice, claim police killed breadwinner

Many families from across the country have come out to allege their kin have been murdered extra-judicially by police during protests that erupted after announcement of presidential election results.

Most of the families insist that their loved ones were not part of the demonstrations or looters as alleged by police, who have said that they shot dead at least 8 criminals since the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared President Uhuru Kenyatta as the winner of the just-ended general election.

A family in Dandora Phase IV, Nairobi, is one of those affected by the post-poll chaos, where they allege that their breadwinner, a father of two, was shot dead outside their house.

In an exclusive interview with the Citizen Digital, the wife who demanded anonymity says the image of her husband’s lifeless body lying outside their plot gate will forever be etched in her mind.

“My daughter rushed to tell me that daddy is dead, I couldn’t believe what I heard. When I went outside to check, I saw him covered with a lot of blood. I tried to turn him around to see where the bleeding was coming from to see if I can salvage his life…that is where he met his death,” she said.

According to her, the husband had gone out to assess the security situation that fateful Saturday morning after the presidential results were announced.

“On the fateful day, I heard him tell our neighbor that he is going to wear a pair of trousers so that they can assess the situation. Shortly we heard screams and gunshots and as they tried to return back to the house, he fell at the gate, shot in the back.”

She says that her husband was neither demonstrating nor stealing, and met his demise in the alleged careless hands of trigger-happy police officers, a position that is also maintained by their neighbors.

“Bullets were flying all over and unfortunately he was shot. We only noticed it when we were fleeing and trying to get into the house, only to see him fall by the gate, dead.”

The Police  and acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i have insisted that the people who shot during the chaos were either looters taking advantage of the unrest or armed criminals. However, this narrative has not gone well with the victims’ relatives.

“It is a big lie. You know the police cannot accept because they know what they have done is total disregard of the law. How did someone who was’t even on the streets demonstrating shot?” argued the widow.

Now, the family and friends of victims are now calling for swift investigations into extrajudicial killings that occurred after the presidential results were announced.
