DCI reopens post election violence cases as victims claim new threats

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reopened the lid into the 2007/2008 Post Election Violence (PEV) cases following claims by victims of new threats against their lives.

DCI boss George Kinoti, speaking on Monday, sought to assure the public that perpetrators of the chaos will be charged locally upon the conclusion of investigations.

Kinoti said they have received reports of ongoing ethnic profiling in certain regions of the country, vowing that the security apparatus is adopting a proactive approach to handle such cases.

The DCI, who addressed the press after a section of the victims recorded their statements at the headquarters on Kiambu Road, said it was important to reopen the probe due to the atrocities that were witnessed such as Kiambaa church where several people were burnt to death.

“We have registered around 72 cases from those whose wives, husbands, children were killed…We have recorded cases of some who were driven out of their homes…We have 118 cases in total registered today with complainants and witnesses,” he said.

“I do not want to regionalize cases by stating the regions from where those who have registered the cases come from…As DCI, we are welcoming all Kenyans afflicted by this problem.”

He added: “Tutaungana na ndugu zetu wa Administration police na Police service…We are going to the field and very soon you will see action.”

DCI Kinoti further urged all victims and witnesses of the chaos to come forward and record their statements, saying they will go after the truth without fear regardless of where that path leads them.
