DCI sleuths question Samburu Senator Steve Lelegwe over alleged incitement

Samburu Senator Steve Lelegwe arrived at Maralal Police Station at 10am for questioning by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over alleged incitement.

The Senator had been questioned for one hour on Monday before being released at 7pm and directed to report back to the DCI office on Tuesday morning.

Unlike Monday where crowds gathered outside the police station to demand his release, Tuesday was relatively peaceful with the Senator only accompanied by his lawyer and a few of his supporters.

Demonstrators accused the government of allegedly harassing Senator Lelegwe and his counterparts who are opposed to the proposed revenue sharing formula for counties.

According to them, if the proposition is passed, Samburu County will lose Ksh.500million

On Tuesday, a section of MCAs also defended senator Lelegwe against the claims of incitement to cattle rustling in Samburu North.

The MCAs threatened to stage another demonstration insisting that the questioning at the police station was a ploy to get him to back down on his tough stance.

Mr Fred Leakono, a resident of Samburu County, asked government to respect Senators and allow their views to be heard on behalf of those they represent.

“When Senators fight for resources for their counties through county revenue allocation formula, they are being heard, when our senator fights for us there should be no problem,” he said.

Senator Lelegwe vowed to stay firm in his decision to ensure that the county will not lose a chance to be allocated adequate funds during his tenure.
