Deal with integrity in the service Kenyatta tells police command

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the leadership of the National Police Service to firmly deal with integrity issues that undermine the image of the police service to regain its glory and muster public trust.

Speaking at the police training college in Kiganjo where 3,933 recruits graduated Friday, the President said his government will continue to modernize the service to enable the officers carry out their duties safely and efficiently.

Kenyatta, who was accompanied by Interior Cabinet Secretary Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery and the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet reminded the graduates that they have taken a vow to protect the country and its citizens and that they need to uphold integrity as they go about their work of securing the nation.

The Head of State pledged his support even as more officers are recruited into the police force and as the country strives to reach the recommended international standards of police to population ratio of one officer to 4,500 civilians.

The officers were urged to observe integrity and discipline when executing their duties in line with their “Utumishi Kwa Wote” motto.

The Head of State also presented awards to four recruits for outstanding performance during the training. Ewoton Tatan was awarded for being the best all round male recruit while Susan Mureithi became the best all round female recruit.

Denilson Abuga was the best recruit in academics. Monica Mukulu was given an award for the best rifle shot scoring 48 out a possible 50 points, the second year in a row a female officer has won that award.

Nkaissery urged the new officers and those who have been in the service to uphold high integrity levels and moral courage to become better law enforcers.

“Anybody putting on the police uniform must portray that quality of doing what is right even when no one is watching,” said Nkaissery.

The Cabinet Secretary said he and the leadership of the police will deliver on the promise to reform the Kenya Police Service and make it a shining example.

On his part, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet also focused on the issue of integrity when he spoke saying that he will do everything to ensure the police force regains its glory.

“I urge all of you to steer clear of evils such as corruption as we are determined to restore the rightful glory of the police force,” said the IG

A total of 3,933 recruits graduated today with 2,304 being men and 1,629 women. 2,000 GSU recruits are still going through their training at the GSU training school in Embakasi and are scheduled to graduate on the 26th of February.
