Deal with school fires or go home, Sossion tells Matiang’i

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has called for the immediate resignation of Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, over rising fire incidents in schools across the country.

Speaking during a fundraiser, at Mogor Girls Secondary school in Chepalungu, Bomet County, Sossion accused the education ministry of doing nothing to deal with the issue which has led to the loss of property worth millions of shillings.

“Education must be managed properly in this country and we are concerned with the spate of violence that has led to massive destruction of property worth millions of shillings in many schools in Kenya. Burning of schools every night without arrests, burning of schools everywhere is disaster without the arsonists being arrested. So we are appealing to Matiang’i to fix this, if he is unable to he can go home,” said Sossion.

The KNUT Secretary General further asked the government to reconstitute the education sector, to make it more efficient.

School arson attacks carried out by students, have become rampant, and they have been linked to students panicking about expected stricter supervision in national exams, poor school leadership, imposition of stricter rules, drug abuse among other reasons.

“I don’t want students to burn schools. I encourage the students to use the constitution. Instead of burning schools, demonstrate openly and express your issues,” said Sossion.
