Death toll from Thika accident rises to 17

The death toll from Sunday night accident in Kilimambogo area on the Thika-Garissa highway has risen to 17.

Thirteen people are reported to have died on the spot after the 14-seater matatu they were travelling in collided with a lorry at around 8.30pm.

According to the doctor in charge of the Thika Level Five Hospital emergency ward, Gichunji Chege, the hospital received 14 patients, four of whom were confirmed dead upon arrival.
Three of the victims were referred to the Kenyatta National Referral Hospital, one to a private hospital and another was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Thika Level Five hospital.
Dr. Chege said the driver of the lorry was received at the hospital 30 minutes after they had received other patients.

Thika OCPD Julius Chombole said the driver of the Kitui-bound matatu was trying to avoid hitting a boda boda rider when the vehicle collided head on with the on-coming lorry.

The OCPD said the number of fatalities could rise as some of the injured were in critical condition.

This came as the latest in a series of tragic road accidents that have claimed over 70 lives in the last one week.
