Death toll hits 20 as heavy rains pound the country

At least 20 people have lost their lives and 30 others rendered homeless due to the ongoing heavy rains in various parts of the country.

The heavy rains have further rendered roads impassable and left a trail of destruction in their wake.

On Tuesday, passengers travelling from Lodwar to Kitale town were left stranded after flash floods swept away the road at Kambi Karai area along the Kitale-Turkana highway in West Pokot.

The flash floods caused massive losses as most of the passengers were traders ferrying perishable goods to the market.

Meanwhile, floods swept away houses in Turkana South at Katilu, Kapupir and Kalemg’orok areas rendering at least 30 families homeless.

At the same time, two men, both suspected to have been drunk, were also killed in the floods.

Elsewhere, a house was flattened and crops damaged by a mudslide in Mt Elgon at Chesikaki ward, Kaptobol village following heavy rains that have been pounding the area.

A girl was also injured in the unfortunate incident after a rock fell on their house.

On Monday a woman reportedly died after she was swept away by floods at Syokimau area and property of an unknown value destroyed in the floods.

The heavy rains rendered most roads in the city impassable and caused flooding of major estates including South C, Imara Daima and Mukuru kwa Njenga.
