Death toll in Bondo police shooting rises to 3

The death toll from Wednesday’s police shooting in Bondo town has now risen to three after a third victim succumbed to bullet injuries while undergoing treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral hospital in Kisumu.

The three are among the six people who were shot during a scuffle that erupted between the police and members of the public.

This was after members of the public stormed the police station demanding that police hand over suspected child abductors to lynch.

The irate members of the public began pelting the police station with stones claiming that the police were protecting child abductors, and engaged police in running battles.

According to Bondo OCPD Mr. Paul Kiarie, the remaining three including a 14 year old boy who had a bullet lodged in his thigh are currently undergoing treatment at Bondo sub-county hospital and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga teaching and referral hospital respectively.

Bodies of the first two protesters who died during the shoot out are lying at the Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary while that of the third victim is at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga teaching and referral hospital in Kisumu awaiting postmortem.

Meanwhile, Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga has urged the national government to compensate the families of the people who were killed and injured by police in Wednesday’s shooting.

Speaking in Bondo when he toured development projects, the governor condemned the incident saying that the police officers used excessive force when dealing with the demonstrators.

Rasanga added that the Siaya county government will assist the affected families and cater for funeral expenses for the three people gunned down by the officers.
