Death toll in Naivasha crash hits 41 after patient succumbs to injuries

One of the four survivors of the Naivasha fire tragedy who was recuperating at Kenyatta National Hospital with serious burns has succumbed to his injuries bringing the death toll from the accident to 41.

Confirming the death while on a tour of Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday morning, Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu said the patient had sustained 80 per cent burns on his body and was in a critical condition.

A second patient with 70 per cent burns is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while the third one with 40 per cent burns is in stable condition.

Mailu disclosed that 17 patients from the fire tragedy have been treated and discharged from the top referral hospital in the country and another one is still recuperating at Nairobi Hospital.

The CS had visited Kenyatta National Hospital to assess the situation following deployment of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) doctors to support nurses and clinical officers in the hospital.

Meanwhile, the process of identifying bodies from the fire tragedy is ongoing at Chiromo Mortuary. According to official, it will take two weeks to identify 33 bodies by DNA.

Yesterday (Sunday) six bodies of GSU officers were identified at the facility.
