Death toll in Samburu attack rises to nine

Police on Sunday recovered one more body at Nabwel Nyang Village in Samburu County, bringing the death toll from the Friday attack to nine.

Leaders, including Samburu North Member of Parliament Alois Lentoimaga and Governor Moses Lenolkulal, urged for calm as the government beefs up security, with County Commissioner Mohammed Birik observing that the violence would only be solved through disarmament.

The bandits raided Nabwel Nyang Village in Samburu north on Friday morning, a raid that left eight people, among them one woman, dead.

Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal said food and water would be supplied to the affected families.

Eight bodies had been taken to Maralal Mortuary on Saturday morning following the Friday morning attack with reports indicating that seven people were injured, two of whom were airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Samburu North Sub-County Commissioner Henry Katana revealed that security officers had been deployed in the area, and 220 head of cattle had been recovered.

Kenya Red Cross emergency teams responded swiftly and attended to ten casualties, including two children.

Although tension remains high in the area, residents have been told to remain calm as security personnel comb through the area in search of the suspects.
