Debt drives police officer to suicide

A Mandera-based police constable on Tuesday night committed suicide in Kisumu over financial constraints.

Kisumu County Police Commander John Kamau says Constable Tyrus Omondi hang himself from the roof of his house in Manyatta slums using a rope.

Kamau says the officer left behind a suicide note stating that he was in a lot of debt and that his salary was negative as well.

The police boss said investigations into the matter were still ongoing  as they await post-mortem results from the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The deceased’s sister, Janet Jaoko said she had gone to visit him last evening and found his door wide open after several unanswered calls.

Omondi’s wife and son were away in Kitale when the incident happened.
