In light of the coronavirus pandemic and the directives on social distancing. The Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) will be holding the first of its kind in Kenya virtual graduation.

There will be no after parties, feasts or celebrations of any kind. Names will be read and credentials conferred online in a ceremony with not more than 15 people.

The virtual event slated for May 8 will see 1,777 students get conferred with degrees in various fields.

The University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Ndirangu Kioni said the unique graduation was informed after numerous requests by the students at the institution.

“The students requested for the graduation ceremony because they wanted their certificates so that they can move on with their lives,” Prof Kioni was quoted by Daily Nation.

The ceremony, expected to be brief, will only have 15 persons including the chancellor and the vice-chancellor and members of the University senate.

The lot will be spread out in the main hall whilst respective school deans will be holed at their offices, reading out the name of the graduands.

Students will however be required to part with Ksh. 3,100 and Ksh.6,100 for Diploma and PhD certificates respectively.

At the same time the 2020 graduands will be required to download an e-invitation card ahead of the ceremony which will be broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube.

After the graduation, the students will receive their certificates in two weeks in a move Prof Kioni says will allow them ‘move on with their lives and seek jobs’.
