Dedan Kimathi University workers down tools over allowances
Over 300 Dedan Kimathi University staff in Nyeri County have downed their tools demanding an increase in their allowances.
According to Kimathi University Union (KUSU) chairman Eric Murage, the staffers would only resume work if the institution’s management heeds to their demands of harmonising their allowances with those of workers in other universities.
Murage said their colleagues in other universities earn a minimum of Sh16,000 as commuter allowance, compared to the Sh4,340 they are being paid at the university.
KUSU Secretary Zakayo Kamangu told the management that most workers commute from far and could use the allowance increment.
“The management should not downplay this issue because most of the workers at the university travel long distances to work,” said Kamangu.
Efforts to seek comments from the university’s Vice Chancellor Professor Ndirangu Kioni over the matter were futile as he declined to speak to the press.
