Defiant Sossion says teachers strike still on despite court order

Wilson Sossion, the Kenya National Union of Teachers boss has said the strike that is scheduled for tomorrow, January 2 is still on.

Speaking on Tuesday after a meeting with the Teachers Service Commission failed to kick off, Sossion remained adamant that not even a court order would stop them.

The union issued a strike threat in December saying they will protest teacher transfers and lack of promotions.

TSC transferred 3,094 head teachers of primary and secondary schools to different institutions across the country, a move that drew sharp criticism from the union.

According to Sossion, the transfers had not yet been approved by the appointing board.

TSC sought the intervention of the Employment and Labour Court which issued a court order on Monday this week temporarily stopping the strike.

The court also ordered further talks between KNUT officials and the teachers employer, that were to be overseen by an intermediary of Labour CS Ukur Yattani’s choice.

On Tuesday, TSC officials failed to appear for the talks.
