Demos In Lamu Town Over Curfew

The residents are demanding the lifting of the curfew now on its fourth month.

They say that the continued curfew was hurting the economy of the area and could lead to loss of jobs.

Speaking to the media, business owners said they will be forced to shut down their businesses until normalcy returns due to fear of incurring losses.

Dealers in fish are also alarmed that the continued curfew would render them jobless.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has said he will hold a meeting with area security officers to discuss and come up with a lasting solution.

This includes the lifting of curfew in areas that were not affected by the attacks.

This comes a day after 17 people including 8 women were arraigned in court over allegations they flouted the curfew directive.

The accused were arrested at night while at a pub taking alcohol and for being disorderly in Mpeketoni.

The suspects were however released on a fine of Ksh1,000 each.

A section of Coast human rights activists and muslim clerics condemned the police decision to extend the curfew.

The clerics and activists said that it has greatly affected the economic activities of the people in the area.
