Police hunt for woman ‘ring leader’ in Ksh.300M gold scam

- Otieno is linked to the seizure of fake gold nabbed on Monday in Kileleshwa.
Police on Thursday launched a manhunt for a woman suspected to be the ring leader in the gold scam syndicate.
At the same time, a lawyer believed to be behind the conning of a Chinese national of nearly Ksh.300 million by posing as a gold dealer is also being sought.
Detectives, now in pursuit of the said ring leader of the network so vast with tentacles spread all the way to Dubai.
The Dubai based gold scammers are reported to scout for potential gold buyers cum victims, after which they are linked to their Kenyan counterparts setting in motion the multi-billion shillings con game.
It is a web that has the Congolese involved, while Kenya is said to be the transit point for the gold.
The victims are told of how the precious metal will be sourced from Congo but a deposit in the millions will be needed to set off the process.
This is when the lies start and the potential buyer is asked for more money to help oil the hands of corrupt government officials in both Kenya and the Congo and after a considerable amount has been squeezed out of them, the merchants disappear.
Several suspects have been smoked out of their hideouts in Nairobi and arrested. On Thursday, flamboyant businessman Jared Otieno was arrested after he surrendered to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Otieno is linked to the seizure of fake gold nabbed on Monday in Kileleshwa with detectives probing the matter saying the businessman was identified on CCTV footage confiscated from the scene.
Two of his high end cars were equally seized in the crackdown.
Those arrested from the Kileleshwa house to remain in custody for seven days while Jared Otieno is expected to be produced in court on Friday.
