Detectives: Man caught in viral video allegedly defiling a minor may walk scot-free

Police in Kericho are investigating an incident in which a man filmed himself while allegedly defiling a minor.

Kericho County police commander Silas Gichunge confirmed the incident saying the man was arrested in his house in the sprawling Nyagacho estate in the outskirts of Kericho town.

Gichunge said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations together with those from the Child Protection Unit were piecing together the evidence to ascertain whether the girl was indeed a minor.

He said the suspect, Patrick Ayoyi was being held in Kericho police custody awaiting the completion of investigation to know his fate, and whether he will be arraigned in court.

However, from the preliminary investigations, the man may walk scot-free if the information that the video was recorded back in 2017 is anything to go by.

Gichunge revealed that if that was the case, then the girl’s age was roughly 20 years and unless she launches a formal complaint that she was defiled, then there will be no case.

He said at the moment nobody will be accused of defilement or rape until the true age of the girl has been established.

The county commander revealed that officers from the Child Protection Unit have visited Kipkelion Girls High School where the girl was learning from for further information regarding her age.

Former employer of the suspect, the managing partner of Kericho booksellers revealed that the suspect was indeed one of their staff from 2000 up to 2009 when he ceased being one of them.

He said Patrick was behaving normally while under employment in his firm but could not tell what became of him after quitting his job since it was none of their business.
