Disaster on Kitale-Lodwar road as KeNHA issues warning

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has closed off a section of the Kitale-Lodwar road.

The authority cited recent heavy rainfall that has cut off a section of the road rendering it impassable.

”The Kitale-Lodwar (A1) road has been cut off at Ortum in West Pokot,” the KeNHA statement reads.

Motorists have been directed to use the alternative diversion provided to allow the authority to ‘desilt and backfill the cut off section.’

Those operating on the road have also been warned against attempting to cross the sections that are cut off.

The heavy rains experienced across the country have led to floods and landslides, resulting in loss of lives and damaged property.

In West Pokot, 53 people were killed and 10,000 left homeless.

Roads leading to the county were also cut off making it impossible for emergency aid responders to access the affected areas.

The government was forced to airlift medical personnel and food among other materials.

Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna later revealed that the death toll following flooding in several parts of the country stands at 132.

“Approximately 330,000 people have been affected by the rains that continue to pound various parts of the country…17,000 have also been displaced,” he said.
