Dissent is over, Raila declares after meeting Uhuru

President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga have called on Kenyans to end their differences in a bid to move the country forward.

In their first ever meeting since the elections, the two leaders emphasised on the need to unite the country which they noted is currently divided along ethnic, religious and political lines, adding that Kenya’s future cannot be dictated by the 2022 General Election.

“Time has come for us to confront our differences because they are becoming too entrenched,” said Mr. Odinga.

“This country is greater than any one individual and for this country to come together, leaders must come together and address what ails our nation,” said President Kenyatta.

Speaking at Harambee House after a closed door that lasted hours, the two leaders stressed that national interest must always prevail calling on Kenyans to support this new charter that will, among other things, address the divisions in a bid to build a stable nation where no one is left out.

“We refuse to allow our diversity to kill our nation, we refuse to be the leaders under whose watch Kenyans lead into a failed nation,” said Odinga.

“This marks a new beginning for our country and that we can differ in political alignment but always remain steadfast and united in matters Kenya,” said Kenyatta

In a strongly worded and seemingly courageous move to unravel the genesis of the current differences, Odinga noted that the origin of these differences that have been passed down generations and what they represent remains unclear.

“No two Kenyans agree on the origin of these differences and what they represent. Millions of our children continue to be born and married into these differences. People are dying out of these differences and many of these differences are already well entrenched into the third generation and leaking into the fourth generation,” he said.

“Kenyans cannot even remember why and where they disagreed in the first place and the reality is we need to save our children from ourselves… our diversity appears destined to be a curse to ourselves today and to our children tomorrow,” he added.

In a solid handshake, the two leaders called truce and called on promising to work together to build a better Kenya.

“ We seek your partnership in this initiative as Kenyans… we have travelled too far to turn back,” said Odinga.

This comes just hours ahead of a four-day visit by the the United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who is on his maiden tour of Africa.
