DNA tests to identify Moi Girls fire victims to take weeks

Families of nine students who died in the Moi Girls High School, Nairobi fire on Saturday were on Tuesday allowed to start viewing their daughters’ bodies and giving DNA samples to help with identification.

According to the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) Deputy Director Pius Masai, DNA samples tests will take from two weeks to a month to complete.

The NDMU boss said counseling services for the affected families have commenced to help them come to terms and cope with the tragedy.

On Monday, the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the fire was not an accident but an arson attack and that police are following leads on specific suspects.

The Education CS said that his ministry is working hard to finalize probe so that the school re-opens on Friday, September 8, for learning not to be interrupted.
