Oluga protests govt plan to import Cuban doctors

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union has objected to a plan by the government to import 100 doctors from Cuba.

According to the union’s Secretary General Ouma Oluga the move will not end the shortage of doctors in the country but take up positions meant for Kenyans.

“KPMDU will not allow the government to hire the doctors from outside the country,” Dr. Oluga said during a medical camp at Kimira Primary School in Rachuonyo North, Homa Bay County.

He argued that the State has no excuse to hire foreign doctors since the country currently has over 1000 unemployed doctors and the number is expected to rise to 2400 in April.

He blamed the government for the shortage of medical professionals, a situation he said was created by an exodus of about 700 doctors, who quit because of the poor working conditions in public hospitals.

Dr. Oluga also criticised the World Bank accusing the institution of sponsoring research studies that portray Kenyan doctors in bad light.

Similar sentiments were echoed by KPMDU Homa Bay Executive Secretary Ben Otieno who expressed concern over the huge workload doctors are faced with due to shortage.
