Documents, weapons destroyed in police station fire

Crucial police documents including court files and ammunitions were burnt to ashes after a fire razed down Longonot Police Station in Naivasha.

According to police officers who witnessed the incident, the 2am inferno eviscerated a building that stored important documents, six G3 riffles and 317 rounds of ammunition.

“We tried to put out the fire, but we could not. The fire, which started at around 2am, razed down three houses belonging to officers. Luckily, no one was injured,” an officer said.

Naivasha police boss Titus Mathuku confirmed the incident, adding that, according to preliminary investigations, the fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault.

Pastor Peter Kariuki, who was among the first people at the scene, said that their firefighting efforts were frustrated by strong winds.

“At around 2am we heard noises; we found that the screams were instigated because of fire. The fire started from the office and spread through three police houses, but we could not manage to contain it because of strong winds. Nothing was salvaged from the inferno,” he said.
